Tung Sol valves produce a strong, gutsy tone. The Tung Sol 6L6-STR are superb output valves with excellent break up characteristics that give your amp that powerful sound that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The gainy Tung Sol 12AX7 have a great mid range that cuts through and maintains definition in a cranked amp.
We test and match the Tung Sol 6l6GC-STR valves in-house, and include a certificate showing the test results.
The downside of high gain amps is that the amp becomes very sensitive to noise, hum and microphonics in the first valve on the input. Any shortcomings here get amplified through the entire signal chain.
Up till the 1970s, a special ECC83/12AX7, designated 7025, answered this problem. The 7025 valves underwent testing to ensure the lowest possible noise, hum and microphonics, making them ideal for the input valve on high gain amps. Makers branded these exceptional valves with the secondary part number “7025”, but in reality, this was mostly just marketing. However, 7025 valves went out of production.
The good news is that Electro Harmonix now makes a proper 7025 worthy of the designation. It just became available in March 2020 and we got the first batch in the UK.
